Swiss Cheese Mushroom Burger

It is always so satisfying to bite into a Swiss cheese mushroom burger. A juicy beef patty under a tasty piece of melted Swiss cheese crowned with caramelized onions and browned mushrooms. Heavenly.

I made these burgers in a skillet but you can definitely make them on the grill. All you need to so is brown the onions and mushrooms before you start grilling. A well caramelized onion will take some time so please be patient and let all those natural sugars do their thing. You will not regret it.

Try not to over handle the beef when you are making the patties. Mix them well and quickly so as to leave the fat intact. This will render you a very juicy burger.

Here is what you need for this Swiss cheese mushroom burger:

Makes four burgers
4 hamburger rolls
1 pound ground beef
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 Tbs. finely chopped parsley
A few drops of Worcestershire sauce
4 long slices of Swiss cheese, cut in half
¼ teaspoon dried thyme
8 oz. white mushrooms, sliced
1 large white onion, sliced
2 Tbs. butter
Salt & Pepper
Olive oil
Crisped bacon strips (optional)

Melt the butter in a large skillet. Add the onions, mushrooms and thyme. Season with salt and pepper.
Cook onions and mushrooms, stirring occasionally, until onions are caramelized and mushrooms are browned – about 20 to 25 minutes.

In a bowl, mix your ground beef with parsley, garlic, Worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper. Mix the meat and form four even sized patties.

Heat a skillet with olive oil and add the hamburger patties. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes and flip when bottom is nice and browned. Top with cheese and cook for an extra 4 to 5 minutes – or longer if you like your burger well done.

Either grill your hamburger buns in the skillet or toast them (or do nothing to them if you would prefer!) Condiment your hamburger buns with your condiments of choice. Mayo and mustard would be perfect for this.

If using, Place the cooked bacon on the buns and top with the cooked patty and cover with mushroom and onion. Top with the remaining bun.

Serve and enjoy!
