How to Make Yogurt

Yogurt

In this post I want to show you how to make yogurt at home without any gadgets. This is a very easy technique that we alwyas use at home. You will need an initial batch of plain yogurt for the live cultures but once you have made your own you can use it over and over again.

This is how to make yogurt at home:

4 cups (1 liter) of whole milk
2 heaping Tablespoons of plain yogurt

Bring the milk to a boil and simmer for about 15 minutes. Cover the pot after it has simmered and allow it to cool down at room temperature.

Heat your oven for about 15 minutes and turn off the heat.

Wash your hands very well and place a finger into the milk. Slowly count to ten. If you are able to leave your finger in the milk without burning yourself it is ready. You might have to do this a few times. It needs to be warm.

Stir in the yogurt and cover the pot. Wrap it in a thick layer of blankets and place it in the oven overnight.
Remove the pot from the oven and put the yogurt into a separate container. Refrigerate.

Loving your recipes! This is the simplest homemade yogurt recipe I’ve seen so far, but I’m curious: I like my yogurt thicker; any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Hi Veronika!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your message. I am happy you like this recipe. I would suggest that you check out this following post http://thefrugalchef.com/2015/05/how-to-make-cream-cheese/. It will show you how to strain the yogurt so it gets thick. I strained this particular one until I had cream cheese but you do not have to. Stop at the consistency that you want it. Thanks again!
