Cooking Brown Rice

Cooking brown rice can be tricky as it requires more time than white rice. It also needs more liquid. The tricky part lies in that many times the liquid will evaporate before the rice is cooked.

Here is a short video on how to cook brown rice in a traditional method or by steaming it. You can also cook brown rice like pasta which in my opinion is better and more effective as it is fool proof.

I sometimes use chicken stock instead of water when I cook my rice this way. Either will work. Narturally if you want the rice to be vegan or vegetarian you will need to use water.

This is what you are going to need for cooking brown rice by steaming it:

Serves four
1 cup brown rice
½ tsp. garlic powder
2 ¼ cups water or chicken stock
1 tsp. salt if using water
½ TBS butter

Mix the rice with the garlic powder and salt if using. Add the butter and the liquid. Bring to a boil.
Cover your pot and reduce the heat to low. Steam for about 35 minutes – until liquid is gone and rice is cooked through. Fluff with a fork and serve.
