Buttermilk Substitute

Buttermilk substitute. If you are out of buttermilk or simply can not find it where you are at – don’t worry! Making buttermilk substitute is easy and quite affordable. I made it with white vinegar in this video but you can also use lemon juice. Make sure to use whole milk.

I have also been told that if you make butter at home the left over liquid is buttermilk. I have not made this yet.

This is how to make buttermilk substitute:

Makes one cup
1 TBS white vinegar or lemon juice
Whole milk

Place the vinegar or lemon juice to a one cup measuring cup.

Add the whole milk to fill the measuring cup without stirring.

Allow the milk to sit without touching it for five minutes.

Use this buttermilk substitute for baking or other recipes that call for it.
